Feast of St. Isaac Jogues & Companions | The North American Martyrs
Celebrate the Feast of the North American Martyrs (October 19) with the true story of St. Isaac Jogues, St. René Goupil, St. Jean de Lalande, and their companion martyrs. When Fr. Isaac Jogues escapes with his life the first time, he has to choose whether to keep going. When a box meant as a gift of peace is misunderstood, Fr. Isaac faces grave danger again. This Catholic saint story for kids and families explores perseverance (part of the virtue of fortitude) and faithfulness (a fruit of the Holy Spirit), with real-life examples for home, a moment for family prayer, and some fun questions to share.
Perfect for Catholic homeschool, family prayer time, car rides, and teaching kids about the saints, martyrs, and virtues.
As for the rest of the companions… Fr. Anthony Daniel, a teacher, was shot by the Iroquois as the chapel burned down around him. Fr. John de Brébeuf, who served in the Americas for two decades, was captured and killed the next year. Fr. Gabriel Lalemant, who had only just arrived and served alongside Fr. Brébeuf, wouldn’t abandon his mission and died the next day. Fr. Charles Garnier, well known for his dedication to the Wendat, helped the wounded during an Iroquois attack and was killed that same year. Fr. Noël Chabanel just kept giving, even though he struggled with the language, and despite the other missionaries having been killed, his life was taken by a man who turned on the faith.
Share with each other:
1. If you were to give a peace box to a sibling, what would it have in it?... If it was a prank, what would it have in it?...
2. Fr. Isaac's box was a gift that was misunderstood. Have you ever done something good that was misunderstood? How did that feel? How did you handle it? Why do you think God allows that sometimes?
